UIC Undergrad Research Reaps 5 out of 6 Awards

The University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC) garnered five out of six awards in the Department of Science and Technology – Regional Health Research and Development Consortium XI (DOST – RHRDC XI) Oral and Poster Undergraduate Research Presentation, November 9-11 at the Abreeza Mall Activity Center, Davao City.

 

The winning researches were conducted by Research and Thesis Writing students from the Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) and Pharmacy-Chemistry (Pharm-Chem) Programs. The UIC participants bested all otherDavaotertiary students in the Poster Exhibit Category reaping all first, second and third prizes with the following researches:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

1st Place

Research Title: Development of Culture Medium Using Banana Musa acuminata

balbisiana Fruit Peel and Pulp as Nutrient Source.

Research Adviser: Mary Jane G. Barluado, Hons Biotech

 

2nd Place

Research Title: Determination of Mercury in the Blood Samples of Employees from Selected Small-Scale Mining Industries in Barangay Limbo,MacComvalProvince.

Research Proponents: Dency Mae Racacho,GilroyRosalinda (Presenter), Jhuana Mae Libumfacil, Vanessa Jan Barrete (MLS Program)

Research Adviser: Annabelle Callano, RPh, MATCC

 

3rd Place

Research Title: Determination of the Nitrite Contents as Food Preservative in Three Tuna Products from Selected Branded and Homemade Producers inGeneralSantosCity.

Research Adviser: Mr. Venchie Badong, MATCC

 

In the Healthcare R & D Undergraduate Oral Presentation Category, the UIC participants garnered two of three major awards as follows:

 

2nd Place

Research Title: Isolation and Identification of Oil-degrading and Lead-bioaccumulating Bacteria and their Degree of Degradation/Bioaccumulation fromCoacoHarbor, Sasa,DavaoCity.

Research Proponents: Elisa Bacus, Vill Patrick de Leon (Presenter), Rae Kristine Desabelle, May Amor Gadayan, Anthony Pascasio (MLS Program)

Research Adviser: Mary Jane G. Barluado, Hons Biotech

 

3rd Place

Research Title: Anticoagulant Activity of Malunggay Moringa oleifera, Oregano Coleus aromaticus Benth Leaf Extracts, and Kamias Averrhoa bilimbi Fruit Juice on Human Blood Sample.

Research Proponents: Angellie Fernandez, Julidette Sapilan, Sr. Maria Lydia  Sarpong, RVM (Presenter, MLS Program)

Research Adviser: Avee Joy B. Dayaganon, RMT, MSMT

 

In the Graduate Research Poster Exhibit Category, the study co-owned by Clinical Pharmacy Professors Mr. Ferdinand Ribo and Ms. Annabelle Callano entitled Prevention of Common Drug-Drug Interactions of Oral Fluoroquinolones with Commonly Prescribed Medications Containing Divalent, Trivalent cations in the Philippine Hospital Setting won third.

 

Contributing four of the six awards above, the MLS Program, joining the annual research expo for the first time, prides that all its entries won major awards. The MLS participants were co-coached by their Research Instructor for Thesis Writing Dr. Adorico Aya-ay and Research Adviser Ms. Mary Jane Barluado with the support of their dean Ms. Avee Joy Dayaganon. It can be recalled that last year, the first-timer Pharmacy Program reaped most major awards both in the undergraduate and graduate categories.

 

The research entries for Poster Presentation Contest were judged according to the following criteria: 40% science and technology impact on health or quality of life; 30% socio-economic benefits; and 30% presentation.  The Oral Presentation Contest were judged based on the technical paper output 55%; overall impact to science, technology, healthcare, and the quality of life 5%; and oral presentation 40%. The winners received cash, medals and certificates.

 

Themed “Enabling Innovation in Healthcare, Creative and ICT Industries”, the Expo showcased three major activities such as (a) Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Exhibit of local ICT products and services; (b) Next Wave Cities Roadshow featuring industry and career talks; and (c) Healthcare R/D Expo showcasing innovative healthcare solutions from ICT, pharmaceutical and Health Management Organizations. The Expo was organized by the DOST – ICT Office and ICT Davao, Inc. in partnership with the RHRDC XI.
