The trumpet of success once again has blown with several UIC Clinical Pharmacy graduates passing North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX).

Since the offering of the B.S. Pharmacy major in Clinical Pharmacy by the University of the Immaculate Conception in 2004, a number of graduates have qualified to sit for the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalence Exam (FPGEE) allowing them to earn a 1,500 hours of Pharmacy Internship in the United States. However, the path does not end here, to become a US Licensed Pharmacist, ultimately the intern has to hurdle the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) and the Multistate Pharmacist Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE).

Some of our UIC Clinical Pharmacy Graduates have successfully passed the NAPLEX. Among whom are:

1. Rose Baes

2. Dr. Marie Ann Co Villegas

3. Jaycelle Draug Turner

4. Leonora Derecho

5. Nerissa Madlambayan

6. Ruby Melgar

7. Ma. Lourdes Jose

8. Sharmie Uy

9. Stephanie Rolando

10. Rose Anne Siapno

The UIC Pharmacy program and the administration salute these UIC graduates. This is another milestone int he history of the UIC College of Pharmacy. Being the only University in Mindanao offering B.S. Clinical Pharmacy, it has paved new way of opportunity for its pharmacy graduates. This is inspiring to all clinical pharmacy students, everything good is worth waiting and fighting for! Carpe Diem!

The UIC Pharmacy program started advocating clinical pharmacy practice in 2004. Through the years, the program has graduated several students. One of these graduates who have made a landmark in clinical pharmacy practice is Mr. Ferdinand Ribo.

Last October 18, 2013, Mr. Ferdinand Z. Ribo, a part-time faculty member of the Clinical Pharmacy Program gave a lecture on Medication Safety at the 200-bed Davao Oriental Provincial Hospital in Mati City, Davao Oriental. It was upon the invitation of the Chief of Clinics, Dr. Hermie B. Nartatez that Mr. Ribo went to Mati to discuss about medication errors and optimizing medication use in the hospital setting. The event was well attended by nurses from all the regional government hospitals in Davao Oriental. The talk was very successful as the nurses vigorously participated in the discussion and even some doctors inquired about certain medication use. Mr. Ribo emphasized the vital role of clinical pharmacists int he hospital setting. He stressed that the prevalent medication use process in the Philippines where only the doctor and nurses are involved is grossly antiquated and without clinical pharmacist in between the,, grave medication errors are bound to happen. The seminar ended positively with a lot of nurses and doctors appreciating the presence of a clinical pharmacist in the wards. Since a visit to Mati is not complete without taking a visit to Dahican Beach, Mr. Ribo was very thankful to see the beach in its pristine beauty courtesy of Dr. Nartatez and the hospital staff.

Australia opens Opportunity for UIC B.S Pharmacy Graduate

Being an Australian Registered pharmacist is every dream of a UIC B.S. Pharmacy student. How to become one was always asked. How to get there was the greatest problem. Which track to take to end as one was left unanswered not until Ms. Aileen B. Hong visited UIC last November 23, 2913.

It was sometime in 2011, when this UIC graduate visited Dean Ma. Eva C. San Juan and requested some papers to be accomplished as a requirement for her to go to Australia and hopefully work her way to become a registered Australian Pharmacist. Amazingly, lo and behold, the once she dreamt of has come to reality.

Ms. Aileen B. Hong considered as an overseas qualified pharmacist seeking general registration in Australia as a Pharmacist, was required to pass an examination conducted under the auspices of the Australian Pharmacy Council (APC) in Manila Philippines. After successfully passing the exam, she was required to complete a period of supervised practice assigned to her by the Pharmacy Board of Australia. After completion of at least 75% of supervised pharmacy practice hours, she undertook an oral legislation assessment, which she successfully passed. With these oral legislation assessment and assigned supervised practice hours, she was given eligibility to apply for general registration and currently is a full pledge Australian Pharmacist.

It seems the track she took was easy, but as she claimed she hurdled it with sweat and blood. She stressed how one needs to be able to show the pane that she was really knowledgeable and confident how it will be if she becomes and Australian registered pharmacist. Not to mention the ability to speak the English language in the native “twang.”

Ms. Aileen Hong’s visit has shed light and inspiration to the rest of the UIC Pharmacy Faculty and Students. She has initiated the beginning of this opportunity. Now we can add another career track for UIC Pharmacy graduates as Australia will be another foreign country they can venture to.

Many were interested to join this event but due to the big number of possible participants, the organizers shortlisted the contestants so that a manageable number will be attained. This event was divided into three categories: the creative research which was open for professionals, SIBOL award for the high school and college levels and the utility model.
