The Dean of the Pharmacy Program, Dr. Ma. Eva C. San Juan, and Pharmacy professor, Mr. Sheldon Silva, presented their research papers in the recently concluded 24th Federation of Asian Pharmaceutical Associations (FAPA) Congress in Bali, Indonesia, September 13 – 16.

Dr. San Juan presented her paper entitled “AN EVALUATION ON THE UNIVERSITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION BS PHARMACY MAJOR IN CLINICAL PHARMACY CURRICULUM: IMPACT ON PHARMACY PRACTICE” while Prof. Silva conveyed his study entitled “A COMMUNITY PHARMACY MODEL FOR AN AUTONOMOUS UNIVERSITY: A PROPOSED EDUCATIONAL SET-UP FOR INTERNSHIP”.

As a co-founder of the five-year Clinical Pharmacy curriculum in the country which the University of the Immaculate Conception pioneered, Dr. San Juan is a fitting resource person on the subject matter. To date, the UIC’s five-year Clinical Pharmacy Major curriculum continues to enjoy its popularity among local and foreign students who choose UIC primarily because of its consistent high ratings in the United States Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination (FPGEE). The UIC Clinical Pharmacy curriculum is equivalent to the US Pharmacy Curriculum Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences, as deemed by the US Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE). Thus, graduates of UIC Clinical Pharmacy curriculum have the US equivalent of BS in Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Meanwhile, Professor Silva’s research birthed from his experience as a Clinical Pharmacy instructor of the Community Pharmacy Internship Program in UIC.

This year’s FAPA theme is “Culture and Medicine: Bringing Traditional Medicine to Modern Life”.  The three-day congress featured 35 keynote speakers of international reputation, 16 symposia, over 250 oral presentations, and 345 poster presentations from all over the Asian region.

Happening only biennially, the FAPA Congress is one of the most prestigious gathering of pharmacists not only for sharing research results and broadening pharmaceutical knowledge thru symposia, but also for social programs, which this year, included farewell dinner, golf tournament, and Indonesian Island tours.

Rafael Carl Ong Go, an Electronics Engineering (ECE) graduate of 2012 makes it to the 9th place in the October 2012 ECE Board Examination. This achievement of the 21-year old Mr. Go brought UIC to the list of ECE topnotchers for this licensure examination. The irrefutable academic institutions with which the top ten examinees are affiliated include Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Saint Louis University, University of the Philippines-Diliman, Ateneo de Manila University, Adamson University, University of Saint La Salle, and Xavier University.

When asked about the intensity of his mental preparation for the examination, Rafael Carl Ong Go who entered UIC in School Year 2007-2008 expressed, “six months of my life were all dedicated to review. I spent much of the time studying the materials but I did not forget to relieve my stress by playing games or hanging out with friends. I prayed to God everyday and went to church every Sunday. Of course, I always do these things. We all do. But the review center helped me a lot too because they taught us the techniques like reading efficiently the problem/item and thinking fast. The UIC curriculum was also a great help. The seed of knowledge comes from what is learned in UIC and then it grows and blooms later in some situations, like for instance, in the right review center; though some students might not appreciate this idea now, I believe, they will realize this fact sooner or later. The record that Go set truly served as an inspiration to many Engineering students. To the next batch of ECE students of UIC, Go said, “I am confident that UIC will produce more competent and successful engineering graduates and I certainly envision that the next EcE graduates will also become globally known and even be included in the list of top inventors.”

With Rafael Carl Ong Go as the 9th placer are the following UIC ECE graduates who completed the list of the UIC passers in the October 2012 ECE Board Examination held in Manila, Baguio, Cebu, and Davao on October 20 & 21, 2012.

ACEBU, ALDON PACON
AGUILAR, PHIL SUAREZ
BELJEDA, EFREN CEASAR CORTEZ
DUQUE, FRANCIS RAY LARGO
ESPERAT, JOMEL LASIN
GO, RAFAEL CARL ONG
HIPAL, FERDINAND PENDON
HUELMA, CHRISTIAN PAUL DEL PILAR
KEMPIS, GREGORIO III ANAVISO
ORDINARIO, ARNEL SEVILLA
PALAZUELO, JED MARC LIM
PLANG, SADDAM OCAL
TABANAO, VICTORY MERCADO
TALBIN, RAHMAN KEITH MARTIN

The national passing percentage rate is 51.57% since only 2,508 examinees were proclaimed passers out of 4,863 who took the licensure examination. ECE Batch 2012 of UIC quite made a commendable mark when 12 out of 15 first takers hurdled the said ECE Board Examination, which registered for UIC a respectable 80% passing percentage rate.
