After being named as the second best literary folio last March, The Collegiate Immaculate’s official literary folio, Roots, of the University of the Immaculate Conception, bested two other folios and was named as Mindanao’s finest in the recently concluded Lanog Awards of Lanog 2012: The Mindanao Wide Student Press Convention on December 6-9.

With a theme, “The Revival of Fearless Journalism,” twenty-nine student publications and over a hundred student journalists from the island of Mindanao gathered together for three days in Felis Resort Complex, Shanghai, Matina Aplaya, Davao City. The annual event was spearheaded by the College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP) – Southern Mindanao Chapter.

The event also showcased basic, intermediate and advance journalism skills training, literary workshops, socio-political discussion and the Lanog Awards 2012.

This year’s Roots issue was rooted in the theme, “Tunog-Buhay”. Literary folios Uhaw from DMMAxim, DMMA College of Southern Philippines (DCSP) and Sulo: Ikalimang Pagliyab fo the Torch, Cotabato City State Polythecnic College were also co-featured in the event.

Salle Ian Cartin, TCI’s associate and literary editor, mentioned that, “It is an immense honor for us to be awarded with that recognition. Out sacrifices will be fully paid if students would take time to digest the gist of the theme.” Roots’ head layout artist, Melardz Vee Sumi-og added that, “After grueling revisions, it is really a prize for us. Hopefully the theme and the over-all contents would appreciated and reflected upon by our fellow UICians.”
