AUN QA Assoicate Member CertificateThe University of the Immaculate Conception now savors ASEAN’s University Network – Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) most sought-after certification, a document certifying the University’s quality of education and processes. The AUN-QA Network is established as the ASEAN quality assurance network in higher education with the responsibility to promote quality assurance in higher education institutions, raise the quality of higher education, and collaborate with both regional and international bodies to benefit the ASEAN community. (Source: AUN-QA Guide to AUN-QA Assessment at Programme Level v.3.0)

Among the 120 AUN-QA associate members in Asia, UIC is granted recognition. UIC is one of the few universities to receive such prided certification in the Philippine archipelago and the first outside the National Capital Region (NCR).

The report disclosed to the Institutional Quality Assurance Officer, Dr. Jo-Ann Y. Solomon, on January 11, 2021, divulged that the four programme level assessment, namely Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Bachelor of Elementary Education, Bachelor of Secondary Education, and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration obtained an over-all rating of Adequate as Expected. This means that all the 11 criteria: Expected Learning Outcomes, Programme Specification, Programme Structure and Content, Teaching and Learning Approach, Student Assessment, Academic Staff Support, Support Staff Quality, Student Quality and Support, Facilities and Infrastructure, Quality Enhancement, and Output show consistent results as expected. The report is based on the information provided in the self-assessment report (SAR), evidence, virtual site tour, and interviews with selected stakeholders, including academic and support staff, students, alumni, and employers.

The online/remote assessment visit happened last November 23-27, 2020, where eight ASEAN assessors perused the abovesaid criteria and verified the claims in the SAR concerning observed practices, existing supporting documents, and virtual interviews among stakeholders.

To further improve the University’s quality of education, the University President, S. Ma. Marissa R. Viri, RVM, with much gratitude, spoke that she is thankful for the collaborative efforts exerted by the members of the academic community headed by the Vice-President for Academics and Institutional Quality Assurance Officer, Dr. Jo-Ann Y. Solomon, to look into the recommendations and find necessary actions to address areas needed for improvement.

The said certification is an additional gem to UIC’s glory, which epitomizes the University’s vision and importance of quality in higher education to develop a holistic quality assurance system to raise academic standards and enhance teaching, research, production, and service.

The University of the Immaculate Conception, one of the pioneering schools in Davao City, has started its limited face-to-face classes on 6 September 2021.

Following the guidelines set in Joint Memorandum Circular No. 2021-001 issued by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and Department of Health (DOH), UIC has opened its Bonifacio Campus to its 4th year Bachelor of Science Medical Laboratory (BSMLS) students.

According to UIC President Sr. Marissa R. Viri, RVM, the limited reopening was “considered to enhance the students’ technical competence in the performance of clinical laboratory tests in aid of diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases vis-à-vis biosafety and waste management”. She explained that “hands-on practice is necessary to achieve this and the other qualities a graduate of BSMLS should possess”.  She further said that “the limited face-to-face internship held at the in-campus Clinical Laboratory and Training Center, the only one in Davao Region, is CHED accredited and has a DOH License to Operate as a training laboratory.  The BS Nursing also applied for limited face-to-face classes for fourth-year students at the Fr. Selga campus and awaiting the Certificate of Authority from the CHED Regional Office.”

The objectives of the joint circular state, “This issuance shall serve as a guide for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) intending to hold limited face-to-face classes during the COVID-19 pandemic and are willing to assume the responsibilities for the reopening of their campuses based on their capability to comply with health and safety protocols, to retrofit their facilities, and to get the support of their stakeholders.”

It can be recalled that all classes were suspended in March 2020 due to public health emergency to mitigate the transmission of the disease. Since then, classes have been held in flexible learning terms.

For the gradual reopening of campuses of HEIs for limited face-to-face classes, the following health-related degree programs deemed necessary in providing additional support to the health system during the pandemic have been prioritized: Medicine, Nursing, Medical Technology/Medical Laboratory Science, Physical Therapy, Midwifery, Public Health.

UIC Enjoys Two Decades of Autonomous Status

The University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC) has received from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) an extension of its Autonomous Status for two more years – until 2023. It has been enjoying Autonomous Status since 2003 and will celebrate its 20th year of autonomy by the end of the most recent extension; translated to two decades of excellence.

An Autonomous Status is the highest recognition that CHED awards to a higher learning institution. According to UIC President Sr. Marissa R. Viri, RVM, “With this given extension, UIC will continue to provide Quality Transformative Ignacian Marian Education or Q-TIME to all enrolling students for the years to come as it takes advantage of the benefits afforded such as innovations in curricular offerings to achieve global competence.”

She added, “Truly, UIC is honored to have the Autonomous Status extended for two more years. This will strengthen UIC’s vision of being a globally recognized Catholic university that nurtures faith, builds passion for excellence, and develops lifelong learners with compassion for service that impacts transformation in a fast-changing society.”

Aside from UIC, Davao Region (XI) hosts three other HEIs enjoying Autonomous Status out of 47 Private HEIs. Some of the benefits of being an HEI with autonomous status are the exemption from the issuance of Special Order (S.O) for graduates and becoming a priority on receiving subsidies and other financial incentives and assistance from CHED. It also gains the privilege to determine and prescribe the curricular programs to achieve global competence; and the privilege to offer new courses or programs in the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The UIC is one of the pioneering educational institutions in the region that gives quality education while adhering to its Core values of Faith, Excellence, and Service.

Troy Ivan O. Dumapias, Grade 10 student from the UIC Basic Education Department, was awarded second runner-up during the ASEAN Energy Awards in the Renewable Energy high school category. The search was a partnership of the ASEAN Center for Energy, Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization, Korea Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and Korean Energy Agency.

Through video conferencing, on 21 September 2021, awarding of winners was presented by the Korea Energy Agency director, Jung Sung Moon. The theme was “Innovation and creativity towards the sustainable and resilient energy system in ASEAN”. According to the organizers, the award was to recognize students’ valuable contributions to nation-building, sustainable development, and energy transition in the ASEAN region.

It is Southeast Asia’s highest reward to encourage and bring about recognition of greater private sector participation and interest in energy development of the ASEAN region in partnership with the public sector,” said the organizers. The award consists of four categories: ASEAN Coal Awards, ASEAN Energy Efficiency and Conservation Best Practices Awards, ASEAN Renewable Energy Project Awards, and the ASEAN Excellence in Energy Management by Individual 2021.

When asked about the award, Dumapia’s coach, Ms. Gladys Lumantas said that it was an unexpected win due to some technicalities. She believed, however, that the participants created excellent outputs in the video-making category. They thought that they did not meet the deadline and they weren’t sure if they complied with the registration process. Fortunately, their output was accepted.

“This award brings pride and honor to the University. It brought inspiration to achieve the University’s mission, which is to produce globally competitive Ignacian Marian learners. This award motivated Troy and other students to manifest diligence, patience, creativity, and competence in everything they do that can challenge them to be better individuals”, she added.

In a statement given by Troy Ivan Dumapias, he said “I feel privileged to be the representative of the school and I feel honored to represent UIC and receive an award. I am thankful for the opportunity to be a part of this competition and for the opportunity to enhance my skills and to be able to show what our school is capable of to the world.”
